University Library marks 150th anniversary of Civil War with Emeritus Professor Henig lecture
Professor Emeritus Gerald S. Henig returns to campus with Civil War lecture.

On the 150th anniversary of the war that split the United States in half during the administration of President Abraham Lincoln, Gerald S. Henig, professor emeritus of history for Cal State East Bay, will provide perspective on how that conflict permanently changed the country. His lecture will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 12 in the University Library on CSUEB's Hayward Campus, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd.
“How the Civil War Changed America Forever: A Sesquicentennial Perspective,” will be presented by Henig in the library's Biella Room. Admission is free and the public is invited. Autographed copies of Henig’s, “Nation Transformed”: How the Civil War Changed America Forever,” will be available for purchase following the presentation.
Linda Dobb, university librarian and interim associate provost, is delighted to host the presentation.
"We are so fortunate to have a scholar of Dr. Henig's stature come to help us recognize both the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and National Library Week," said Dobb. "His speeches are always well attended, inspirational and meaningful to audiences of students and community members."
Henig holds a bachelor's degree from Brooklyn College, a master's from the University of Wisconsin, and a doctorate in American history from the Graduate Center, City University of New York. He has written numerous articles on the political and military history of the Civil War, including, “Henry Winter Davis: Antebellum and Civil War Congressman from Maryland,” and, “Civil War Firsts: The Legacies of America’s Bloodiest Conflict,” which he co-authored.
The latter book, which is available in paperback as “A Nation Transformed: How the Civil War Changed America Forever,” was selected for both the History Book Club and the Military Book Club.
Henig, a veteran of 40 years of teaching, has received the CSUEB Outstanding Professor Award and is a four-time winner of the Pi Kappa Delta Best Lecturer Award.
In recent years he has delivered numerous public lectures to a wide variety of audiences, including Civil War roundtables, Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes, public and private libraries, museums, historical societies, and community centers.
Campus parking is $2 per hour at meters, or $10 per day, per vehicle from campus pay lots.
