Men's soccer releases 2011 spring schedule

  • March 29, 2011

The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team will play full schedule of tune up games this spring, including a pair against Division I opponents, Head Coach Andy Cumbo announced on Monday. The Pioneers, whose roster features 22 first-year players, will take on conference opponents Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State as part of a nine-game spring slate that includes seven games at Pioneer Stadium.

"Obviously, we are still very young but we've made a lot of progress since August," Cumbo said. "We have developed greatly in the weight room and with the ball during the winter quarter and we're eager to see how we look now compared to the fall season."

East Bay will open the spring campaign on April 2 with a pair of games at home against Academy of Art and Menlo College. A week later, the Pioneers will meet CCAA foe Cal State Monterey Bay and Notre Dame de Namur at Pioneer Stadium on April 9.

The spring schedule continues on April 23, when Cal State East Bay plays host to cross-bay rival San Francisco State and Holy Names. On April 30, the Pioneers will welcome the Banana Slugs from UC Santa Cruz. East Bay will close out the spring season with two Division I opponents – Santa Clara and UC Davis – on May 7 or 8 in Santa Clara.

The Pioneers are coming off Cumbo's second season at the helm in which freshman goalkeeper Bryce Bookhamer earned NSCAA/Performance Subaru Men's Division II All-West Region Third Team honors. The Pioneers lost just one senior after the 2010 season and have gained four mid-year additions since the fall, while four freshman signees will join East Bay for fall 2011.
