CSUEB Spring arts run gamut of styles, types, approaches

Be it original, traditional, jazzy or bold, Cal State East Bay’s schedule for spring arts events has it all covered.
The C.E. Smith Museum of Anthropology continues an exhibition of University employee collections. The music department will have a myriad of jazz programs, as well as “Carmina Burana.” The Department of Theatre and Dance presents “Seven Deadly Sins,” among others, and the University Art Gallery will present a collection of juried student work.
Most programs are on the university's Hayward campus, located at 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd.

C.E. Smith Museum of Anthropology is showing, Stamps and Lamps, Toys and Tins: The Things We Collect and Why We Collect Them,” in the Main Gallery, and a continuation of last year’s, “Trails to Rails: Building the Transcontinental Railroad,” in the East Gallery March 7 through June 3. (Closed May 30.) The museum is open Monday-Friday, 11 a.m. -4 p.m. in Meiklejohn Hall, 4047. Admission is free.
The Los Angeles Percussion Quartet will perform April 5 at noon in the Music Building (MB) 1039. Admission is free.
The First Tuesdays Jazz Masterclass will feature Trombonist Josh Roseman April 5 at 7 p.m. in MB 1055. Admission is free.
REDSHIFT, new and experimental Music for Chamber Ensemble, will perform April 7 at noon in MB 1055. Admission is free.
The 26th Annual CSUEB Jazz Festival Concert, featuring Saxophonist David Binney with the CSUEB Jazz Ensembles, will perform April 15 at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre. All tickets will be $10.
The Jazz Concert/ Masterclass featuring Turkish musicians Cenk Erdogan, fretless guitar; and Sumru Ağıryrürüyen, voice; and Bay Area musicians Kai Eckhardt, bass; and Jason Lewis, drums; will perform April 21 at 7 p.m. in MB 1055. Admission is fee.
The Annual Student Juried Exhibition is set for the University Art Gallery, on the first floor of the Art and Education Building (A&E). The opening reception and awards ceremony will be April 25 from 5 -7 p.m. The show will continue April 26 -June 4 (except Memorial Day). The gallery is open Monday -Thursday, and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday from 6-9 p.m. Admission is free.
The First Tuesdays Jazz Masterclass featuring Pianist Mark Levine will be May 3 at 7 p.m. in MB 1055. Admission is free.
The Jazz Standards Ensemble and Latin Jazz Ensemble, Johannes Wallmann and Saúl Sierra, directors, will perform May 5 at noon in MB 1039. Admission is free.
“Seven Deadly Sins,” music by Kurt Weill, book by Bertholt Brecht, will perform May 6-7 at 8 p.m., and May 8 at 2 p.m. in the University Theatre. Admission is $15 for general admission, $10 youth, seniors, and alumni, and $5 for those with a CSUEB student ID.
The Jazz Club at the Studio Theatre: East Bay Student Jazz Ensembles, with guests The Art Lande Quartet, Johannes Wallmann and Dann Zinn, directors, will perform May 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Studio Theatre. Admission is free.
“Sins, Taboos, and Other Bodily Delights,” a theatre and dance concert, will perform May 13-14 at 8 p.m., and May 15 at 2 p.m. in the University Theatre. Admission is $15 (general), $10 (youth, senior, and alumni), and $5 (those with CSUEB student ID).
The Percussion Ensemble Recital, Arthur Storch, director, is set for May 17 at noon in MB 1039. Admission is free.
The Glasow Fellowship Concert, with new works and premieres for chamber ensemble will perform May 17 at 7:30 p.m. in MB 1055. Admission is free.
The Pilipino Culture Night will be held May 20 at 7:30 p.m. and May 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the University Theatre. Tickets are available from the Pilipino student organization.
Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana," performed by the East Bay Choral Union, Palo Alto High School Concert Choir, Las Positas Chamber Choir, and alumnae of the CSUEB Dance Ensemble, with Buddy James, conductor, will be presented twice. The May 21 performance begins at 8 p.m. at Notre Dame de Namur University, 1500 Ralston Ave., Belmont. The May 22 performance at 4 p.m. will be at the Center for the Arts, 19501 Redwood Road, Castro Valley. Admission will be $7 (general); $5 (youth, senior, and alumni) and free for those with CSUEB ID.
A Guitar Ensemble Recital, Marc Teicholz, director, is set for May 24 at noon in MB 1055. Admission is free.
The CSUEB Wind Symphony & Jazz Orchestra, Wesley J. Broadnax and Johannes Wallmann, directors, will perform May 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre. Admission will be $7 general; $5 youth, senior, alumni; and free to those with CSUEB ID.
The Chamber Winds Recital, Wesley J. Broadnax, conductor, will perform May 26 at noon in MB 1055. Admission is free.
A Faculty Recital featuring Joseph Schwantner’s “Music of Amber,” Wesley J. Broadnax, conductor, will perform May 27 at 8 p.m. in MB 1055. Admission is free.
Performance Fusion, plays and dance produced by theatre and dance seniors, performs May 27-28 at 8 p.m. and May 29 at 2 p.m. in the University Theatre. Admission is $15 (general), $10 (youth, senior, and alumni), and $5 (for those with CSUEB student ID).
The Graduating music students recital will be June 2 at noon in MB 1055. Admission is free.
The CSUEB Symphony Orchestra Concert, featuring Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez” with Marc Teicholz, guitar, Wesley J. Broadnax, conductor, will perform June 2 at 7:30 p.m. in MB 1055. Admission will be $7 (general); $5 (youth, senior, alumni); and free (for those with CSUEB ID).
Orchestre dB New Music Ensemble, Rafael Hernandez, director, will perform June 3 at 7:30 p.m. in MB 1055. Admission is free.
CSUEB Jazz Singers with Jazz Improv Ensembles, Buddy James and Johannes Wallmann, directors, perform June 4 at 8 p.m. at the Berkeley Yacht Club, 1 Seawall Drive, Berkeley. Admission is free.
A Student Composers Recital is set for June 5 at 8 p.m. in MB 1055. Admission is free.
