History Spring Speakers discuss 100 years of woman's suffrage

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in California, the Cal State East Bay Friends of History is sponsoring a panel discussion with Robert Cherny and Mary Ann Irwin, co-editors, and Susan Englander, contributor, about their new anthology, “California Women and Politics, From the Gold Rush to the Great Depression” (University of Nebraska Press).
The discussion, including a question and answer session, will be led by Jessica Weiss, professor of history. It will take place from noon to 1:15 p.m., Thursday, May 12, in room 311 of the Old University Union, on the university's Hayward campus, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd.
The state granted women the right to vote in the 1911. However, the anthology shows that women’s involvement in California’s public life began long before this change and has continued vibrantly ever since, according to the Dee Andrews, professor of history and event organizer.
The year 1911 also marked the high-tide of the Progressive Movement, which has influenced the state’s political culture in a myriad of ways, especially through the expansion of the public sphere in California state parks, public education, and ultimately the public university system.
"Progressivism continues to be the touchstone for proposition-style politics in our own time for progressives, libertarians, and conservatives alike," said Andrews.
“It’s hard to think of a more relevant topic for Californians’ current quandaries,” said Nancy Thompson, associate professor and chair of Cal State East Bay's History Department. “We’re certain that the panel will be enlightening on the many ways in which the events of 1911 continue to shape our time.”
The program is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
