Introduction from Emily Brizendine, Executive Director

Welcome to the Concord Campus E-newsletter, a publication designed to inform you about the programs and events at California State University, East Bay’s Concord Campus.

This year marks the 30th anniversary that Cal State East Bay has brought the citizens of Contra Costa County direct access to higher education. Since the opening of our temporary home at Pleasant Hill High School in 1981, and the establishment of our current campus in 1994, Cal State East Bay remains the only four-year public university in Contra Costa County, offering undergraduate, graduate, and credential programs to meet the needs of the region’s growing population.

While California state budget cuts in education have created some challenges, we continue to develop a varied collection of quality academic programs. The core of our curriculum consists of our Nursing and Health Sciences programs, the former funded in partnership with John Muir Health. We also offer a lower division Pre-Nursing program, upper division Liberal Studies and Teacher Preparation programs, and a host of other undergraduate degree pathways. Our teacher credential program remains strong, and we’re continuing our innovative partnerships with K-12 school districts in Antioch and Mt. Diablo, including our longstanding “Day of the Teacher” conference for current educators and those interested in entering the teaching field.

Higher education is not just for the young. The Osher Life Long Learning Institute (OLLI) has found a permanent home at the Concord Campus, offering mature learners exciting courses and monthly forums on anything from wine tasting to contemporary California politics.

I’m also pleased to announce that we’ve just received funding for a state-of-the-art upgrade to our distance learning facility, which will enhance the ability of Concord students to attend CSUEB’s Hayward campus courses without venturing far from home.

Exciting things are also happening outside of the classroom. We have remodeled our bookstore, updated our student café and lounge, and witnessed the creation of new student clubs, a Concord Campus Student Ambassador program, and an O-Team leadership group. We’ve recently appointed a program coordinator from Associated Students, charged with managing student life activities. A new electronic bulletin board system will also be installed throughout the campus, providing information on open classes, upcoming events, and other news.

We’ve certainly made strides from our humble beginnings at the old Pleasant Hill High School. But we are far from finished.

Our inaugural issue highlights the 30 year anniversary celebration of Cal State East Bay’s presence in Contra Costa County, a student view of our development of the campus’s Pre-Nursing Program, a review of this year’s Day of the Teacher event, and the announcement of this year’s recipients of the Executive Director Leadership Scholarships.  We hope you find the articles interesting and enjoyable. This is your invitation to share with us in the celebration of Cal State East Bay’s Concord Campus. It’s Your University; Our University; the University of Possibilities
