9th Annual 'Day of Teacher' held at CSUEB's Concord Campus

  • April 12, 2011

Over 70 teachers and individuals interested in exploring teaching as a career braved the inclement weather to attend the annual Day of the Teacher event held on March 26th at the Concord Campus. This year’s program was entitled “Day of the Teacher: Touching Lives Forever."

Presenters and session leaders included Cal State East Bay staff, faculty members, and teaching professionals from around the region. General sessions were conducted in the 126 seat Oak Room. Workshops were held in smaller classrooms scattered throughout the campus.

Concord Campus director Emily Brizendine, herself a teacher and professor from Cal State East Bay’s College of Education and Allied Studies, welcomed the participants. Dr. Joseph Ovick, superintendent of the Contra Costa County Office of Education, opened the event with a speech that dealt with the current budgetary threats to K-12 education. Michele Lamons, 2011 Contra Costa County Teacher of the Year, provided the keynote address, which focused on teaching as a viable and rewarding profession.

Participants were offered a series of workshops that explored a range of teaching strategies. Sessions included “Technology in the Classroom,” “Teaching in a Multicultural Classroom,” and the extremely popular “Effective Classroom Management Techniques.”

Workshops for future teachers explored CBEST/CSET test taking strategies, and a session on “Marketing your Teaching Career,” which included mock interviews.

Attendees were treated to breakfast, a bag lunch, and a conference souvenir. Raffle prizes from several donors were also distributed.

Post-event evaluations showed that participants were extremely pleased with “all the practical advice,” they received on various teaching issues; “the open dialog on the part of the presenters” at a number of sessions; and the “valuable tips to follow” during the interview process.

“I really enjoyed talking to everyone,” one respondent commented. The presenters were “great and I learned a lot”

“This year’s event was fabulous, the participants exuded energy and excitement about the teaching profession!” says Annie Nogales Chandler, Day of The Teacher event coordinator and Assistant Director of Enrollment Development for the Concord Campus
