Highlands Summer Theatre offers shows at CSUEB's Hayward campus
Theatre and Dance senior Chalia La Tour will direct and co-direct summer performances.

"An Evening of Short Plays" leads off Cal State East Bay's Department of Theatre and Dance's Highlands Summer Theatre performances July 28-31 and Aug. 6-7 in the Studio Theatre on the university's Hayward Campus, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd.
That show will be followed by “An Evening of Solo Theatre and Interpretive Reading” Aug. 4-6 and 12-13.
Senior Chalia La Tour, recipient of the 2011 Friends of the Arts Theatre and Dance scholarship, assisted by Lecturer Ulises Alcala, will direct the first segment, “Savage/Love,” written by Sam Shepard and Joseph Chaikin. Lecturer Ulises Alcala will assist La Tour, while La Tour, Amy La Faille, ‘10, and Anthony Johnson will choreograph the piece. Dana De Guzman, ‘11, will provide the music. The piece, composed of various poetic vignettes commenting on the many facets of love in its beauty and sorrow, will incorporate dance, music, voice and movement to examine the ramifications of the loss of human touch and physical interaction in the digital age.
Alcala and La Tour will reverse roles for the second segment, “Yerma,” a new, short version of a play dealing with restrictive Spanish views of marriage, child bearing, machismo, and homosexuality. Written by Federico Garcia Lorca, this version has been newly adapted by Alcala (including much of the original Spanish language), with original music by Dana De Guzman and choreography by La Faille.
Performances will be in the Studio Theatre at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, July 28-30, and 2 p.m. Sunday, July 31 and Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 6-7. On July 28, all seats will be $5. Tickets for all other performances range from $5-15. They may be reserved at: or by calling (510) 885-3118.
“Secrets Exposed,” the second show, deals with what is mystical and meaningful to college students today. It is directed by A. Fajilan, assistant professor of theatre and dance, and her students. The readings will include both original student work and other student-influential writing. The students explore issues from their home communities and the influence they might have on the future.
Performances will be at 8 p.m. Aug. 4-6 and 12-13. On Aug. 4, all seats will be $4. Tickets for all other performances will range from $4-12. They may be reserved at: or by calling (510) 885-3118.
Campus parking is $2 per hour at meters, or $5 per day, per vehicle from 5 p.m. Friday-midnight Sunday and weekday evenings – payable at kiosk machines that accept dollar bills and quarters.
