MARTINEZ -- Police Chief Gary Peterson promoted five officers Wednesday as part of a department reorganization designed to support a new community policing program.

Capt. Eric Ghisletta recently completed a 10-week course at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va.; Sgt. Jon Sylvia and Sgt. Bryan Dodd each have 27 years of law enforcement experience; and Sgt. Dave Mathers, whom Peterson described as a "computer crimes guru," recently completed a master's degree in public administration at Cal State East Bay. Lt. Aaron Roth also was promoted.

Peterson launched the community policing initiative shortly after replacing former Chief Tom Simonetti last December.

One police officer is assigned to each of the 24 neighborhood policing areas in the city. In addition to patrols, officers will hold neighborhood meetings to share information about crime in the area and about crime prevention strategies.
