Al Fresco postponed one week to Oct. 12 due to rain forecast

Tradition will mix with novelty on Wednesday, Oct. 12 as the 23rd annual al Fresco celebration introduces new games and a new site in the heart of the Hayward Campus. Al Fresco was postponed from the original Oct. 5 due to the expectation of rain on that day.
Students, staff and faculty are invited to enjoy free food and games while receiving information on clubs and organizations at the event, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. between the bookstore lawn and the Recreation and Wellness Center.
“Al Fresco brings a sense of community to student life,” said Jonathan Stoll, programs coordinator for Associated Students Inc. “It’s a day of fun, and it’s also a day for incoming students to get insight as to what resources are available to them. Every department on campus will be there.”
Organizers estimate the festival will attract approximately 2,500 attendees.
This year, al Fresco’s festivities will take place in a new location; last year activity was concentrated in front of the New University Union. Clubs, organizations and fraternity tables and booths, providing information and hoping to recruit interested students, will be arranged in lined from the front of the bookstore lawn leading upward through the walkway of the student trailers. The tables will continue to the Recreation and Wellness Center and downward to the Meiklejohn Hall lawn, where a barbeque meal will be available.
Hot dogs as well as vegetarian alternatives will be grilled and served along with chips, cookies and other refreshments.
For fun, inflatable games such as basketball and an obstacle course will be added this year, Stoll said. Players will have the opportunity to compete to win prizes. After a DJ spins top 40 hits, Agora stage will provide the audience with local acts and student performers throughout the event.
“Al Fresco shows freshmen and transfer students what East Bay is all about, so it’s important for the event to make a big impression,” said senior Tricia Bumanglag, who serves as student assistant for Student Life and Leadership Programs. “It’s going to be fun.”
