FREMONT -- East Bay do-gooders soon will have nearly 20 opportunities to help their neighbors or spruce up their communities.

Organizers in four East Bay cities are looking for volunteers for Make a Difference Day this Saturday.

So far, 13 projects have been scheduled for Fremont, three for Union City and one apiece for Hayward and San Lorenzo.

Projects in Fremont include helping the Dominican Sisters maintain their community garden, picking up litter at Lake Elizabeth and helping clean the Tri-City Animal Shelter.

For people who don't want to get dirty, other activities include participating in a clothing giveaway sponsored by Lighthouse Bible Fellowship, sorting and stocking the food pantry operated by the Tri-City Volunteers and helping a local nonprofit enter thousands of clients into a new database.

In Union City, the Public Works Department is organizing its annual beautification projects. This year, volunteers are being asked to help with projects at William Cann Civic Center Park, Liberty Park and the Meyers Estate Dry Creek Gardens.

Union City cleanups are scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon.

The only project scheduled for Hayward is sponsored by the graffiti-removal group Keep Hayward Clean and Green. The effort will run from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. starting at Cal State East Bay.

In San Lorenzo, the fraternal group Modern Woodmen is donating baby supplies to Birthright of San Lorenzo, a center that recommends women not terminate their pregnancies.

Make a Difference Day was started by USA Weekend Magazine more than 20 years ago.
