PIONEERS EXHIBIT PROMISE: The visiting Cal State East Bay men's basketball team gave Division I Pacific a spirited battle in a 66-63 loss in an exhibition game Saturday. Berkeley graduate Mark Samuels, a junior guard, had a game-high 30 points. His layup gave the Pioneers their final lead with about three minutes remaining. Cal State East Bay opens the regular season at home against Dominican on Friday.
