Women's soccer player collects academic honors

Cal State East Bay women's soccer player Tenaya Davis was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District First Team in November. The team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America and honors student-athletes for their performance both on the field and in the classroom.
Davis, who completed her fourth season with the Pioneer women's soccer team in October, earned a 3.5 grade point average, the highest among the 14 players named to the Academic All-District Team.
“Tenaya has served the university with integrity and class,” Pioneer coach Amy Gerace said.
A business administration major with a double emphasis in marketing and advertising, Davis is a two-time Cal State East Bay Scholar Athlete Award winner and CCAA All-Academic honoree. She also currently serves as the president of the Cal State East Bay Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
The Fremont native finished her senior campaign with 16 starts in 18 matches and helped the team post six victories, including five wins during league play. Davis anchored the Pioneer backline that posted a pair of shutouts and earned a 2-1 victory over then-No. 13 Cal State Stanislaus, which went on to capture the 2011 CCAA Tournament title.
Davis was joined by eight other CCAA players on the team, which was comprised of student-athletes from the CCAA, Great Northwest Athletic Conference and Pacific West Conference. Members of the Academic All-District First Teams from throughout Division II are also eligible to be named to the Capital One Academic All-America Team, which will be selected later this month.
Student-athletes selected to the Academic All-District and All-America Teams must meet several criteria on and off the field. Honorees are required to have completed at least one academic year at their institution and must be a starter or important reserve who has participated in at least 50 percent of their school's contests, while maintaining at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA.
Davis is the second Pioneer student-athlete to earn Capital One Academic All-District First Team honors in 2011. In the spring, sophomore water polo player Claire Pierce collected Capital One Women's At-Large Academic All-District honors after leading the team in scoring and steals and posting a 3.86 GPA.
