Linscheid: More presidential applicants needed

CHICO The California State University system is not the top choice of many would-be campus presidents, apparently.
Bob Linscheid of Chico, vice-chairman of the CSU Board of Trustees, said it was hoped a new campus president for Cal State-Fullerton could be hired in January.
However, too few people applied for the job, so the application period has been extended, said Linscheid, who chairs the Board of Trustees committee in charge of the Fullerton presidential search.
While he didn't want to say how many people applied, he did say, "the pool ... lacked some depth and diversity."
He said he hoped more good applications will be received and that final interviews can be done in late January.
The Fullerton search committee consists of four trustees, including Glen Toney, who is from Chico.
The small pool of applicants wasn't a big surprise, given the state of California's economy and the Legislature's lack of support for higher education, Linscheid said.
Generally, the number of applications for top positions in the CSU is "far less than five years ago," he said.
The CSU has a number of presidential positions to fill in the coming year.
Besides the Fullerton search, the board is currently seeking to hire a new president for Cal State-Northridge.
Linscheid said in February a search will begin for a president for San Bernardino State University, and after that trustees will look for someone to head the San Francisco State University campus. Linscheid said a president is needed for Cal State-East Bay, but since an interim president has been appointed, that search may be postponed.
In hiring all these presidents, a new policy on selection and compensation will be in effect, Linscheid said.
The trustees have adopted the selection part of the new policy, and they will consider adopting the compensation part when they meet Jan. 24 and 25.
