CSUEB English grad students to read their fiction April 23
English graduate student Christopher Morgan has organized a reading of recent, original fiction by himself and fellow English grad students.

Five English graduate students will read from their fiction at a program presented by the Cal State East Bay English Department on Monday, April 23.
Organized by graduate student Christopher Morgan, the 7 p.m. program will be held in the Biella Room of the University Library, on the Hayward Campus, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd. Admission is be free, but parking on campus is $2 per hour in pay lots.
Readers will be Janet Burns, T.J. Lyons, Justin Melville, Christopher Morgan, and Johann Schiffer.
Burns’ reading will focus on a young man attempting to turn his hobby of writing fan letters into a lucrative career. Lyons will base his story on a young boy who sleeps every night with the dogs. Melville sends a high school English teacher into a memory search in his piece, while Morgan’s characters will look for falcons on the Warren Hall roof and Schiffer places his character in the worst play known to mankind.
Alumnus Zac Walsh created a similar program in 2010. Morgan resurrected it to celebrate the creativity, dedication and determination of these grad students to write despite the dueling demands of their studies, families, and jobs.
“These are five terrifically talented writers are eager to get out there and strut their stuff," said Stephen Gutierrez, English professor and faculty liaison for the project. "They’re all so different, unique in style and sensibility. It’ll be a wonderful literary treat for the literati at Cal State East Bay. I can’t wait to hear them, as they’ll be reading new works, and they’ve earned my deep respect and affection. A great way to showcase what’s happening here in the halls of the English Department!”
Each presentation will be a recently written, currently unpublished piece of fiction running about 15-20 minutes in length - sufficient to develop a story line.
