New California State University East Bay President Leroy Morishita visited Acts Full Gospel Church to promote the upcoming Super Sunday event on February 19, a day when all 23 California State Universities will speak at African American Churches to increase college enrollment rates of African American students.
During an early Super Sunday presentation February 12, President Morishita talked to both the 8 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. services at the church, located in 1034 66th Ave. in Oakland.
Super Sunday began seven years ago with 13 churches in the Bay Area, including Acts Full Gospel. This month, university representatives will be hosted by more than 100 churches reaching more than 110,000 people in California.
Speaking to the congregation, Morishita acknowledged the growing costs of a college education but emphasized that students in households with incomes under $70,000 a year are eligible for a variety of financial resources covering most of the tuition.
“I am here to tell you that the CSU commitment to motivate African American students to prepare for college and to provide access to a college degree is stronger than ever,” he said.
Students were invited to the upcoming Educational Summit for African American and Latino Youth on Saturday February 25 at Cal State University East Bay, which will include free workshops for attending college, financial assistance and on-the-spot admissions.
