Arts programming planned throughout the spring at Cal State East Bay exposes patrons to historic and contemporary creative expression.

A wide array of arts programs and performances await the university community and visitors to Cal State East Bay this spring, including antique slides, modern art, a range of music forms, and original theater and dance pieces by emerging artists.

Most programs and performances will take place on the university's Hayward Campus, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd.

The University Art Gallery is continuing a winter exhibition of work by Bay Area students through April 14, and the “Magic Lantern,” an exhibition of antique slides, is continuing in the C.E. Smith Museum of Anthropology until June 15. 

The annual spring art gallery reception and awards ceremony will also commemorate the Art Department’s 50th anniversary, according to Jill Ringler, art gallery curator and manager.

Thomas Hird, professor and chair of theatre and dance, says the department’s two performances will be notable. In "Refractions," faculty and students will explore how movement can reveal deep meaning in what we otherwise see as trivial or common topics. In “Performance Fusion,” graduating seniors creatively entertain and comment on the college generation's lives and lessons. 

C.E. Smith Museum of Anthropology
“The Magic Lantern: Illuminating a Bygone Era” may be seen in the C.E. Smith Museum of Anthropology, Meiklejohn Hall 4047, through June 15 (except holidays). Hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays.

The exhibition, organized and arranged by students, features collectable glass lantern slides dating from the late 1800s through the early 1900s from the McCown collection, the University Library Special Collections, the Island City Masonic Lodge, and several other private collections.

University Art Gallery
• An “Emerging Arts Exhibition” of 2-D work by college students from throughout the Bay Area may be viewed through April 14.

• The Annual Student Juried Exhibition will open with a reception, awards ceremony for those in the exhibition and for the annual video and portfolio competitions, and celebration of the Art Department’s 50th anniversary from 5-7 p.m. May 8. The show will be open through June 9 in the gallery on the first floor of the Art and Education Building. Admission free.

Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and Saturday, and 2-4 p.m. Thursday. The gallery will be closed March 30 for Cesar Chavez Day, and May 28 for Memorial Day.

Music
• The first concert of the quarter will be performed by the Humboldt State University Jazz Combos, Dan Aldag, director, at noon April 3 in the Music Building 1039. Admission free.

• Saxophonist Dayna Stephens will conduct the First Tuesdays Jazz Masterclass at 7 p.m. April 3 in Music Building 1055. Admission free.

• REDSHIFT & Dutch composer Gerard Beljon will be on campus April 10. There will be a noon performance in Music Building 1055, and a talk at 1 p.m. in Music Building 1521.

• The 27th Annual CSUEB Jazz Festival Concert, with guest artist and saxophonist Seamus Blake, will be at 7:30 p.m. April 20 in the University Theatre. All tickets will be $10. Performers will include the East Bay Jazz Ensembles, the U.S. Army Field Band, Jazz Ambassadors, Septet.

• The East Bay Jazz Singers will perform at noon, April 24 in Music Building 1055. Admission free.

• The East Bay Wind Symphony, John Eros conductor, with guests Mt. Eden High Wind Symphony & String Orchestra, Kevin Cato and E. Ronnie Cato, conductors, Performance begins at 7:30 p.m. April 24 in the University Theatre. Admission will be $7/$5/free with CSUEB ID.

• The First Tuesdays Jazz Masterclass will be conducted by saxophonist Geoff Countryman at 7 p.m. May 1 in Music Building 1055. Admission free.

• The Jazz Standards and Jazz Composers’ Ensembles, Johannes Wallmann and Dann Zinn directors, will perform at noon May 3 in Music Building 1039. Admission free.

• The San Francisco Piano Trio, consisting of violinist Axel Strauss, cellist Jean-Michel Fonteneau, and pianist Jeffrey Sykes, will perform at noon May 15 in Music Building 1055. Admission free.

• The First Tuesdays Jazz Masterclass at 7 p.m. May 15 will be conducted by trumpeter Brian Lynch in Music Building 1055. Admission free.

• The Jazz Club at Studio Theatre, comprised of Blue Note Jazz Ensemble, Latin Jazz Ensemble, Electric Jazz Ensemble, and the Contemporary Jazz Ensemble, with special guest Brian Lynch, trumpet; and Johannes Wallmann, Dann Zinn, and Saúl Sierra-Alonso, directors, will perform at 7:30 p.m. May 17 in the Studio Theatre. Theatre/Dance
• Refractions, by the CSUEB dance ensembles, produced and choreographed by Nina Haft and Eric Kupers, is set for 8 p.m. May 4, 5, 11, and 12, and 2 p.m. May 13 in the University Theatre. Admission will be $15/$10/$5 with CSUEB Student I.D.

• The Philipino Cultural Night, produced with the Pilipino American Student Association by A. Fajilan and Richard Olmsted, will feature an original, student-generated script blended with traditional folk dance and contemporary pop culture.
