Thanks to a one-two finish by Linda Brown and Deanna Tyndall, the Cal State East Bay women’s golf team posted its second consecutive team win, taking the title at the UC Santa Cruz Spring Invitational on Tuesday. Brown claimed individual medalist honors for the second tournament as well, finishing two strokes ahead of Tyndall on the final day to help the Pioneers place all five players in the top 15.
Brown and Tyndall entered the final round tied with the best round after both opening the tournament with a first-round 76 (+4). Brown capped the tournament with an 81 (+9) to finish with a 13-over 157, just edging Tyndall, who posted a second-round 83 (+11) to claim runner-up honors with a total score of 159 (+15). The victory for Brown is her second of the season after claiming the individual title at the Shootout in Arizona on Mar. 9.
Andrea Castellanos finished in a tie for ninth, posting a two-round total of 171 (+27), while Kate Devine finished two strokes back of her with 29-over 173. Arielle Swan-Smith rounded out the Pioneer contingent, tying for 14th with a two-round total of 178 (+34). Swan-Smith rebounded in the second round, taking eight strokes off her first-round 93 to finish as the only East Bay player to improve on the second day.
The team victory marks the second invitational title of the season and in program history for East Bay, while Brown’s individual medalist honors are the third of the 2011-12 campaign for the Pioneers. Brown and Tyndall have both claimed individual titles for East Bay this year.
Cal Stat East Bay returns to action in two weeks, when it travels to Santa Rosa for the Sonoma State Spring Invitational. The Pioneers will get underway for the first of two rounds at Foxtail Golf Club on Mar. 9.
