'Pink Ribbons' documentary to be screened, author to appear for Q and A at CSUEB

The noted documentary, Pink Ribbons Inc., about how marketing campaigns to cure cancer have transformed a once-stigmatized disease into an industry centered around surviving a health crisis, will be screened at California State University, East Bay, on Wednesday, April 25. Following the film, Samantha King, who wrote the book -- Pink Ribbons Inc: Breast Cancer and the Politics of Philanthropy -- on which the film is based, will be available to answer questions.
The evening's presentation, sponsored by the university’s new Center for Sport and Social Justice and the Department of Kinesiology, and will begin at 7 p.m. in the University Theatre on Cal State East Bay’s Hayward Campus, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd. Admission is free and open to the public.
The book and the documentary, directed by Lea Pool, have gained notoriety nationally "due to the shifting relationship of the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Planned Parenthood," said Becky Beal, associate professor of kinesiology at CSUEB.
King is an associate professor, graduate coordinator, and associate director of the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Her research addresses the politics of health, sport, and the body.
The goal of Cal State East Bay’s Center for Sport and Social Justice is the encouragement and dissemination of political discussion and action around sport, including race, class, gender and disability.
“The center’s programs and activities seek to promote the creation of more humane and socially just sport practices and opportunities for all,” said Rita Liberti, director of the Center for Sport and Social Justice and a professor of kinesiology at CSUEB.
