Men's golfer earns academic honors

Cal State East Bay men’s golfer Chris Herzog was named as a Cleveland Golf/Srixon Division II All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) on Wednesday. Herzog was one of 52 Division II student-athletes honored by the GCAA, which annually recognizes the top golfers on the course and in the classroom across all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA.
Selected as Cal State East Bay’s Male Athlete of the Year, Herzog led the Pioneers during the regular season. Behind his 74.48 season scoring average, the Pioneers made their first ever NCAA Regional appearance, claiming 10th in a field of 20 teams at the Central/West Regional in Arizona. Herzog also helped lead the team to a sixth-place showing at CCAA Championships, where he tied for eighth in a field of 40 golfers.
During the regular season, Herzog was East Bay’s top finisher at six of its 10 tournaments, including three top-10 showings during the spring campaign. Herzog became the Pioneers’ first CCAA Golfer of the Week award winner in March following his individual medalist honors at the Pioneer Shootout. The Medford, Ore., native shot a five-over 221 to pick up the win and help guide the Pioneers to the team title at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo.
The junior also found success in the classroom, earning a 3.86 grade point average in economics to garner CCAA All-Academic honors. In addition, Herzog was honored as the men’s golf team’s Scholar-Athlete Award winner at the annual Pioneer student-athlete banquet.
Herzog joins just five other golfers from the CCAA on the All-America Scholar Team, including two student-athletes each from Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus. All told, 238 student-athletes across all three divisions and the NAIA were honored.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team’s competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II, 77.0 in NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2.
