California State University (CSU) expects to receive a record number of applications for Fall 2013.
As of Tuesday of this week, CSU had received 471,208 applications – an increase of about 7 percent from this time last year – and expects that number to exceed 600,000, and possibly reach 700,000, by the time the CSU priority application period closes tomorrow, Friday, November 30.
While the CSU deadline is Friday, will continue accepting applications until March 1.
Transfer applications are leading the growth with 138,468 so far this year, a 20 percent increase from the previous year. At least part of the rise in transfer applications is due to CSU's closing of spring 2013 enrollment to all but a very limited number of students.
At Cal State East Bay, overall applications for next fall are up 1,463 over last year with 13,332 submitted as of Tuesday. Growth in applications to CSUEB was highest among transfer students, totaling 4,823, up 26 percent over fall 2012.
Nearly 5 percent more first-time freshmen, or 8,087, have applied to Cal State East Bay compared with the same time period the previous fall. (Fall quarter 2012 saw the university enroll 1,568 students in its largest first-time freshman class to date.) Those applying for credential and graduate programs also have increased, totaling 422, a 23 percent rise over last year.
Typically, potential CSU students submit applications to more than one campus and application numbers are not necessarily a reflection of the total number of potential students. However, the high number of applications underscores the continued demand for higher education.
Potential CSU students are encouraged to apply before the priority application period ends on Nov. 30 by going to .
