Presentation at CSUEB Thursday considers status of women in sports since enactment of Title IX
- November 14, 2012
The status of women in sports since the establishment of Title IX 40 years ago will be the main topic of a Nov. 15 lecture at California State University, East Bay, by Nicole LaVoi, associate director of the University of Minnesota’s Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sports.
The evening's presentation, sponsored by CSUEB’s Center for Sport and Social Justice and the Department of Kinesiology, will begin at 7 p.m. in room 124 of the Valley Business and Technology Center on Cal State East Bay’s Hayward Campus, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd. Admission is free and open to the public.
LaVoi’s talk will focus on females in sport and issues impacting women in leadership positions since 1972, when Title IX – the federal law prohibiting sex discrimination in educational institutions – was enacted.
“She also will discuss her most current research on media’s tendency to sexualize female athletes and how that portrayal impacts the legitimacy of women’s sports,” said Becky Beal, professor of kinesiology at CSUEB.
The research interests of LaVoi, who earned her master’s degree and doctorate in kinesiology from the University of Minnesota, include: the physical activity of girls and women in sport, media portrayals of females in sport, gender and coaching science, and the influence of sideline parent behaviors at youth sports events.
The goal of Cal State East Bay’s Center for Sport and Social Justice is the encouragement and dissemination of political discussion and action around sport, including race, class, gender and disability.
