Criminal justice students at Cal State East Bay are helping day laborers protect themselves from wage theft.

The class has created a video to teach day laborers their rights.

Alejandro Galindo with the Hayward Day Labor Center says exploitation of day laborers is extremely common. "A lot of these employers are hiring workers already with intent of defraud them."

The new video depicts people getting stiffed by employers, and tells workers how to create a paper trail by using a small notebook the Labor Center created to record information like license plate numbers, hours worked and the name of the business.

Galindo says agencies around the country are already asking for a similar video for their own clients.
