Winter issue of Cal State East Bay Magazine spotlights service to region's children

In its latest issue, Cal State East Bay Magazine asks “Are the kids all right?” — and looks to faculty, alumni and students for their answers.
The winter 2013 issue — — focuses on the significant ways the CSUEB community is stepping up to help kids in an era of shrinking public support for schools, social services and other programs.
In the cover story, alumni and faculty explore the factors that contribute to healthy, successful children both in and out of school. Comprehensive programs like the federal Promise Neighborhood initiative, innovative research in physical and mental health issues and lifelong outreach from volunteers are all part of how the university community is filling the gaps left by budget cuts.
Students, faculty and staff share personal stories about the challenges of navigating college with an autistic spectrum disorder, and how CSUEB is leading the way in supporting students with its College Link program. And graduate students in the Community Counseling Center learn how to communicate with children and infants to help families cope with crisis.
This issue also profiles Howard Hyman ’79, an executive of Fremont Bank and the university’s Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, and highlights some of the exciting events commemorating President Leroy Morishita’s investiture in October 2012.
