Alumni volunteers needed to reach next generation of Pioneers

This year, Alumni Relations is partnering with Planning, Enrollment Management and Student Affairs (PEMSA) to invite alumni volunteers to join Cal State East Bay staff and faculty at outreach events to prospective students, both on and off campus.

“These are such great opportunities for alumni to share their insights about college, how they chose to attend Cal State East Bay and what they’ve been able to accomplish with their degrees,” said Penny Peak, director of Alumni Relations and Programs.

PEMSA is looking for volunteers at this month’s Education Summit for first-generation college students, to be held at CSUEB’s University Gymnasium Saturday, Feb. 23. This annual event, sponsored by the university, the Alameda County Office of Education and other regional education partners, invites African American, Latino, Asian American, Native American and Pacific Islander students and their families to learn about college readiness.

Sessions for students and families will cover financial aid, STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math) and other academic topics. A College and Resource Fair at the event will showcase CSU campuses in Northern California, as well as regional community colleges and other related vendors.

Volunteers are needed to help at registration and check-in, setting up for sessions, monitoring workshops and assisting tour guides who will lead visitors on short tours of the Cal State East Bay campus.

Alumni of color or those who were also the first in their families to attend college are especially encouraged to volunteer.

For those who may not be close enough to volunteer at one of CSUEB’s East Bay campuses, PEMSA is also seeking alumni volunteers to join recruiters at college fairs in their areas.

Increasing the university’s presence at college fairs in a wider geographic area is important to attracting more top students, and alumni are great ambassadors for the CSUEB experience, said Peak.
