A digest of top, need-to-know dates, deadlines and events for faculty, staff and students, "This Month at CSUEB" is a regular feature of The View e-News. Read on for updates and previews of what’s happening at Cal State East Bay in the coming month:
• For 10 years, students have benefited from scholarship opportunities provided through the African American Faculty and Staff Association’s annual Scholarship Dinner and Celebration. The tradition continues at 5:30 p.m. April 5 in the New University Union multipurpose room with authentic soul food, live entertainment and $1,200 scholarship presentations. Tickets are $40 general admission; $30 for students. Purchase tickets, make a donation or (click on the Associated Students label).
• Don't miss the former president of Ireland, Mary Robinson, when she appears at Cal State East Bay April 8 to discuss “Making Human Rights the Compass for All Ethical Globalization.” The speaking engagement by Robinson, who is also former United Nations high commissioner on human rights, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the New University Union multipurpose room. The program is presented by ASI Diversity Center and its Between the Lines Speaker Series.
• Volunteer to greet prospective students and their families April 12 and 13 at CSUEB’s Welcome Day. The annual event, which is expected to draw approximately 2,800 attendees, introduces participants to the university’s academic offerings, resources and the campus setting. All exempt staff who work with students are invited to participate; non-exempt staff may participate with manager approval. Sign up and by 5 p.m. April 5.
• Thinking about retirement or want to save more for your retirement? Come to the Financial Planning Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 10 in the Old University Union, room 102. Organized by Human Resources, participants will get plenty of information about the tax shelter annuity program, including an 11 a.m. presentation by a retired annuitant and financial and retirement consultant who will provide an overview on saving for retirement by investing in the 403(b), 401(k), and 457 plans. Representatives for each plan will be available to answer questions or make an individual appointment. Spouses and partners are welcome to attend. Registration for the presentation is encouraged; email Katie Jackson at katie.jackson@csueastbay.edu to sign up.
• Attend a lecture by Monica Fitzgerald, My Journey from Cal State East Bay to the Harlots and Rogues of Puritan New England: On Becoming a Historian of Women and Gender, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., April 8, in the University Library, Biella Room. The event is sponsored by The Friends of History and the History Students Association.
• Next up in the English Department’s Distinguished Writers Series is a presentation by poet Patricia Smith. The National Slam Champion will offer a poetry reading, followed by a question-and-answer session and book signing at 7 p.m. April 25, in the University Library, Biella Room.
• A CalPERS Retirement Specialist will offer a seminar on Planning your CalPERS Retirement from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. April 30 in the University Library Biella Room.
