Performance Fusion offers diversity of student-created work through June 9

Performance Fusion, Cal State East Bay’s Theatre and Dance Department’s annual celebration of student-created performances, will be divided into two distinct programs to put an enhanced spotlight on the diversity of the students’ work in 2013.
Program “A” of the Fusion performance will take place in the University Theatre at 8 p.m. Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1, while Program “B” will be performed in the more intimate Studio Theatre at 8 p.m. Friday, June 7 and Saturday, June 8, as well as at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 9.
Both theatres are located on the northern portion of CSUEB’s Hayward Campus, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd.
Program “A” performances offer a wide range of subject matter from a comic look at society’s dependence on technology (“Unplugged,” written and directed by Jasmine Williams), to charting a female friendship broken up by Hip Hop (“Wrong Directions,” written and directed by Teresita Brown). Also featured is “Crisis, the Musical,” a short tuneful show about graduating with a theatre degree and ending up proselytizing in Uganda. The latter was written by and will be performed by Francisco Garcia and directed by John Vu.
“Dance, as always, is a crucial part of this program, showing off the creativity of our student choreographers who must bring their pieces from conception to fully realized performances,” said Marc Jacobs, assistant professor in the CSUEB Theatre and Dance Department.
Program A also features dance pieces choreographed by Jennifer Stern (“Be Mi End”) and Nathan Olivas ("End of Time”).
Program B performances center around women.
“Kamikaze Blonde” is both a funny and harrowing tale of one woman’s battle with substance abuse, written and performed by Tara Paulson and directed by Jasmine Williams. “The Nemow” is a comic look at American women as viewed by an alien culture and is written and directed by Belgica Rodriguez. “Sistah Girl; Five Shades of Fierce” is compiled and performed by Kritian Stovall and chronicles five black women from different places and times. That piece is directed by Anastasia Wirth.
Program B will feature work by Cal State East Bay dance majors in “She Resolves,” which uses jokes and commentaries of the late humorist George Carlin to comment on men’s attitudes towards women. “She Resolves” is choreographed by Sarah Cartmill-Ibarra.
