Pioneer Points

- June 28, 2013
June is often not a particularly eventful month on the athletics calendar, but Cal State East Bay received big news on June 8 when senior baseball player Charlie Sharrer became the first Pioneer selected in the Major League Baseball draft since 2010. Sharrer was as a pitcher by the Chicago White Sox. The right-hander had a memorable senior season for the Pioneers, leading the team in home runs (as a hitter) and saves (as a pitcher). He was a first-team All-West Region honoree and won the National Player of the Week award for March 18-24. From everyone at Pioneer Athletics, we wish Charlie all the best in his professional career.
June also marks the end of the academic year, and with it, the opportunity to see another class of Pioneer student-athletes walk across the stage at commencement and collect their well-earned diplomas. It's a joy to witness their growth as young women and men during their time at East Bay, and we hope the skills and values they learned as student-athletes will serve them well as graduates.
For Pioneer Athletics, 2012-13 was a remarkable year, just our fourth competing in NCAA Division II. We witnessed outstanding, record-setting performances on the court, in the pool, and on the baseball field. And as we enter July, our coaches are hard at work recruiting future classes of Pioneer student-athletes while we collectively prepare to reach even greater heights in 2013-14.
Stay tuned for next month's edition of Pioneer Points, which will be the first by Cal State East Bay's newly hired Director of Athletics Sara Lillevand Judd.
