Pioneer golfer Chris Herzog named All-America Scholar

Cal State East Bay men's golfer Chris Herzog has been named as a 2013 Cleveland Golf/Srixon Division II All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Herzog was one of 52 NCAA Division II student-athletes honored by the GCAA, which annually recognizes the top golfers on the course and in the classroom across all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA. This is the second consecutive year Herzog has earned this honor.
The Medford, Ore. native was the Pioneers' top golfer during his final two seasons at CSUEB. After being named the university's Male Athlete of the Year as a junior in 2012, he followed it up with an outstanding senior campaign. Herzog led the Pioneers with a 73.66 scoring average for the 2012-13 season. He finished in the top 10 in five tournaments, landed in the top-20 in three others, and was the champion of the NDNU Argonaut Invitational.
Herzog has racked up an impressive list of postseason honors. He was selected to the GCAA All-West Region team and the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) team. He was also twice named CCAA Golfer of the Week during the spring.
A standout performer in the classroom as well, Herzog completed his senior year with a 3.72 gpa in economics. In addition to being a two-time All-America scholar, he also a two-time CCAA All-Academic honoree and a two-time winner of the Pioneer men's golf Scholar-Athlete award. This year, he was the Pioneers' recipient of the Dr. Hal Charnofsky award, conferred annually by the conference on one male and one female student-athlete from each school who demonstrates excellence in competition and in the classroom.
Herzog is one of three student-athletes from CCAA on the All-America Scholar Team, joining two golfers from Cal State Monterey Bay. All told, 227 student-athletes across all three divisions and the NAIA were honored.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 78.0 in Division II, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.20.
