HAYWARD -- Former Kelseyville High School basketball star Emily Schaefer has joined the Cal State East Bay women's basketball coaching staff as an assistant coach.

Cal State East Bay head coach Suzy Barcomb recently announced the hiring of Schaefer and Kelsie Kruger as assistant coaches. Schaefer played two seasons for the Pioneers after transferring from Butte College in Oroville in 2007. She graduated from Kelseyville High in 2005 and was named Lake County's Female Athlete of the Year during her senior season. Schaefer will look to help the Cal State East Bay women's squad qualify for a third straight postseason berth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

"Kelsie and Emily have outstanding work ethics and great character, and they're both ecstatic about joining the coaching staff," Barcomb said. "Emily is an East Bay graduate, so we're thrilled to welcome her back to the family. Kelsie has experience both playing and coaching at the Division II level. She was a successful student-athlete and will be a valuable addition for us."

Schaefer served as team captain and played in 26 games as a senior for the Pioneers, scoring a season-high 10 points in a game against Simpson University. She graduated from Cal State East Bay in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in history.

More recently, Schaefer served as an assistant coach at Marsh Junior High School in Chico and was actively involved with the Golden Valley AAU program. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in kinesiology from Chico State.

"I've added two quality young coaches to the staff," Barcomb said. "I think their high energy and commitment will be a great fit at Cal State East Bay as we continue our efforts to build a championship program."
