HOME ROOM: Science Night in Hayward

Cal State East Bay students are putting on a science night, Noche de Ciencias, at Hayward High School on Sept. 19.
"We want to get students involved in science and STEM, or science, technology, engineering and math," said Gloria Monterro, president of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Cal State East Bay student chapter, which is hosting the event.
The evening is intended for both students and their parents. Students will take part in science and engineering activities, while their parents attend workshops about financial aid and applying for college. The workshops will be in both English and Spanish. College students also will be available for any questions.
One activity will have students form teams and create jelly bean launchers with office supplies to get them interested in engineering, Monterro said. "Whoever can make a jelly bean launch the farthest wins. We don't give them instructions on how to build it; it's up to them," she said.
Prizes will be given to the top winners.
The science night is 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hayward High library, 1633 East Ave. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. The event is open to all ages and ethnicities. All Hayward high school students, including those from Tennyson and Mount Eden, are invited, Monterro said.
