Union City cop named interim Vacaville police chief

A Bay Area police chief with extensive years of experience has been named interim leader of the Vacaville Police Department.
Randy Ulibarri, a 30-year veteran of the Union City Police Department, will take over for retiring Vacaville Chief Richard Word.
Word's last day is Nov. 27.Ulibarri's first day will be Nov. 18. He will serve until a permanent replacement is found, city officials said Tuesday. The recruitment process is expected to take four to six months.
Ulibarri was named Union City's police chief in 2000, a position he held for seven years. He has also served as interim police chief in the cities of Newman (2007-2008) and Folsom (2010-2011).
A graduate of California State University, Hayward (East Bay), Ulibarri also attended the FBI National Academy and the Peace Officer Standards and Training Supervisory Leadership Academy. He is married and has three adult sons.
Word is retiring after nearly 30 years in law enforcement.
"Vacaville is a wonderfully supportive community whose members are willing to act on its public safety concerns," Word wrote in his letter of resignation back in September. "It is also a place made better due to the personal investment of its public servants."
Word , 51, has spent the last nine years as the head of the Vacaville Police Department and 20 more in Oakland, where he also served as chief.The new grandfather, says he looks forward to spending more time with his family.
