Acclaimed author Peter Orner to speak Feb. 6 in CSUEB91麻豆天美app Distinguished Writers Series

Peter Orner, award-winning short story writer and novelist, will read from and discuss his latest book, “Last Car Over the Sagamore Bridge,” Thursday, Feb. 6, as part of Cal State East Bay’s Distinguished Writers Series, presented by the university’s English Department.
The 6 p.m. event will be held in the Biella Room of the University Library on CSUEB's Hayward Campus, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd. Admission is free and the public is invited. A book signing and question and answer session will follow.
“Peter Orner is a fantastically gifted writer,” said Steve Gutierrez, director of the Distinguished Writers Series and professor of English at Cal State East Bay. “We are lucky to have him read here. He puts the real back in realism."
“Last Car Over the Sagamore Bridge” – a collection of stories that is a New York Times Editor’s Choice book – is scheduled to be published this year.
Orner’s previously-published books include “Love and Shame and Love,” “The Second Coming of Mavala Shikongo,” and “Esther Stories,” which was awarded the Rome Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Goldberg Prize for Jewish Fiction. It also was a finalist for the Pen Hemingway Award and the New York Public Library’s Young Lions Award.
His writing has also appeared in the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, the Atlantic Monthly, Granta, The Paris Review, McSweeney’s, The Southern Review, The Forward, and Ploughshares. The Chicago-born Orner has taught at the University of Iowa’s Writer’s Workshop, University of Montana and the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. He also is a professor at San Francisco State.
