CSUEB's Hayward Campus to host Education Summit 2014 on March 8

As part of its ongoing outreach to increase the numbers of first generation, African American, Latino, Asian American, Native American and Pacific Islander students attending college, California State University, East Bay will host "Education Summit 2014: It Takes a Community!" Saturday, March 8, on the university's Hayward Campus, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd.
The summit will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and commence in the University Gymnasium.
More than 20 workshops and motivational presentations will be offered in addition to a college information and resource fair. Prospective college students in attendance can get information on possible fields of study as biochemistry, computer networking, engineering, environmental studies, mathematics, pre-nursing, business, and other majors.
“The Education Summit is designed to engage and motivate the youth of traditionally underserved communities and their families to pursue and live the dream of obtaining a college education by providing information and resources in a festive, family-friendly environment,” said Greg Smith, CSUEB associate vice president for Planning and Enrollment Management, who chairs the event.
The summit will bring together a wide range of community resources and expertise to empower young people aspiring to go to college, and their families. Those also encouraged to attend the summit include parents and families, high school and middle school students, school administrators, teachers, counselors and business and community leaders.
The summit is co-sponsored by Cal State East Bay with Alameda County Office of Education, Hayward Chamber of Commerce, Chabot College, Laney College, the Contra Costa County Office of Education, Fremont Bank Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Education through its “Asian American-Pacific Islander Student Service Operation for Success” (AANAPISI) grant program.
The summit will feature distinguished speakers, information sessions, and an educational resource fair. Topics to be covered in summit workshops and panels are student life experiences on campus; college admissions; and financing a college education through grants, scholarships and financial aid; STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) careers; and community support programs.
The college resource fair will feature representatives of other Northern California CSU campuses, community colleges and community outreach groups.
