Anyone interested in exploring teaching as a career will want to attend “Day of the Teacher: Keep Calm and Teach On” scheduled for Saturday, April 5, on the Concord campus of California State University, East Bay, 4700 Ygnacio Valley Road.
This 12th annual Day of the Teacher conference begins at 8:30 a.m. and runs until 2:30 p.m. It is open to anyone considering teaching as a career, as well as new and seasoned education professionals at the kindergarten through 12th grade education levels. High School teaching academy students are also welcome to attend.
The conference will feature a series of workshops that include: Effective Classroom Management Techniques; Incorporating Common Core Standards; Teaching at a Community College; and Using Technology to Engage Students in Learning. Additional workshops will explore funding an education in order to teach, CBEST/CSET test-taking strategies, and mock interviewing for a teaching job.
Susan Bonilla, California State Assemblymember for Contra Costa County and a former school teacher, will provide opening remarks for this year’s session, which highlights the important and often unnoticed work that teachers commit to on a daily basis.
San Ramon Valley High School’s Cindy Egan and Montalvin Manor Elementary School’s Beth Levine -- both honored as Contra Costa County Teacher of the Year for 2013 – will give the conference’s keynote addresses. Montalvin Manor Elementary is located in San Pablo, while San Ramon Valley HS is in San Ramon.
“The purpose of Day of the Teacher is to empower, encourage, and validate any person interested in the teaching profession,” said Annie Nogales Chandler, conference coordinator for Day of the Teacher. “When participants leave the Concord campus after the conference, I want them to feel inspired. They will have current information while having the chance to interact with experts and peers.
“Those in attendance will acquire many of the tools they will need to begin, or continue their quest toward a teaching career,” Chandler said.
Conference presenters and session leaders will include Cal State East Bay faculty and staff members, along with other experienced education professionals.
