Cal State East Bay will launch a new (BA-WOST) this fall. The program, geared towards working adults, is designed to acquaint students with feminist scholarship on women, gender, sexuality, paid and unpaid work, research methods and theory.

“Women's studies is a liberal arts major and a practical choice for students in today's world,” said Lynn Comerford, BA-WOST director. “Graduates will draw from their women's studies' education in every job, in every relationship and in every circumstance.”

The 18-month program, offered completely online, is organized in a cohort format that allows a group of students to start and finish together creating a sense of camaraderie among students.

Throughout the program, courses are offered on theories of feminism, women’s health and health care, violence against women, women and public policy, and more. The curriculum also includes action research, and fieldwork courses. For example, during their senior year, students will participate in a field project in which they explore a topic of their choice drawing from theories and methods learned.

“It is the highlight of the degree and provides students the opportunity to engage in data collection and analysis on a topic that is meaningful to them,” said Comerford.

CSUEB’s BA-WOST program aims to prepare graduates for positions in a variety of fields including human services, government, public relations, politics, business, education, the arts, law, international relations and criminology.

“Students will develop skills that are highly valued by employers, including analytic skills for problem solving, critical thinking, data collection and analysis and written communication,” said Comerford.

Applications are being accepted through June 30. Prior to entering the Online BA-WOST program, students must have completed all lower-division requirements.
