Eileen Barrett

Cal State East Bay English professor and graduate coordinator Eileen Barrett – a faculty member since 1987 – has been named recipient of the University’s 2014 George and Miriam Phillips Outstanding Professor Award.

The annual award honors a faculty member for teaching, research and service to CSUEB. George and Miriam Phillips were civic leaders in Hayward who helped bring the then-state college to their city.

“Professor Barrett is passionately supportive of students and their success both inside and outside the classroom,” said Cal State East Bay President Leroy M. Morishita. "Her many years of dedicated service to the University community is remarkable.  She is very deserving of this honor and recognition for all that she has accomplished."

Barrett, who received CSUEB’s Sue Schaefer Award last year “for her superior service to the University,” was cited for being “an exemplary faculty member in all areas.” She also was lauded for being a model teacher and a great researcher.   

Barrett previously served for 15 years as director for the Office of Faculty Development, now known as the Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching, and has taught courses that include Gay and Lesbian Literature, Critical Theory, Theory and Practice of Teaching Literature and Composition, as well as several graduate seminars.

In addition, Barrett has edited several books, including “American Woman Writers: Diverse Voices in Prose Since 1845,” “Virginia Woolf: Lesbian Readings (Cutting Edge: Lesbian Life and Literature),” and “Approaches to Teaching Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway (Approaches to Teaching World Literature).”

Barrett and her spouse, Elissa Dennis, reside in Oakland. The two have been instrumental in establishing who are graduates of Oakland’s public high schools.
