James Monroe Iglehart won the Tony for his performance as the genie in "aladdin."
He is from Hayward and he graduated from Cal State East Bay and on stage last night he thanked some of his old teachers.
"I also -- i want to thank my professors for teaching me how to tap dance and keeping me in college. I know this supposed to be the most dignified awards show of the season. but this is a praise shout out."
Aladdin had five tony nominations but Iglehart was only winner from the Disney musical.
