Cal State East Bay senior guard Stephanie Lopez has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, announced on Tuesday. She becomes the first Pioneer in program history to earn the honor twice in the same season.
CCAA Release:
Lopez scored 29 points in the team’s 74-66 overtime win against Cal State San Bernardino, as the Pioneers clinched their fourth straight trip to the CCAA Postseason Tournament. She went 13-for-13 at the free-throw line and led the team in points (29), assists (7), and steals (3). Appropriately during that performance, she broke the program’s single-season record for free throws made.
On Saturday’s “Senior Night” Lopez went 11-of-13 from the free-throw line, and led East Bay with 24 points and six assists against CCAA-leading Humboldt State. For the week she averaged 26.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and three steals per game. Lopez took 26 of the team’s 42 free throws for the weekend, and knocked down better than 92 percent of her attempts.
Lopez has scored the third most points in conference play, averaging nearly 17.4 points in 20 CCAA games. She is four points shy of the East Bay single-season scoring record, and 21 away from becoming the first player to reach 500 points in a single season.
Earlier this season Lopez was named the CCAA Player of the Week, underscored by a 35-point performance in a road win over Dominican. Despite only playing two years with the Pioneers she holds top-10 marks in points, free throws made, and assists.
Cal State East Bay (16-10, 11-9 CCAA) will close out the regular season on the road against Cal State Stanislaus (Feb. 27) and Chico State (Feb. 28).
