Rachel Echeandia and Erik Miranda led a group of Cal State East Bay students at the California State University Student Research Competition with a second place finish in the undergraduate education category.
Echeandia and Miranda, both psychology majors, were among the 12 CSUEB undergraduate and graduate students selected to present at the statewide competition on May 1-2 at Cal State San Bernardino. The pair was awarded a runner-up finish and $250 for their presentation titled “Mastery Orientation and Self-Efficacy Predict Achievement in Middle School Science.” Their research focuses on the role of motivation and self-efficacy on middle school students’ performance in science and is part of the Integrated Middle School Science (IMSS) Partnership. Echeandia and Miranda were mentored by Professor Jeffery Seitz and post-doctoral researcher Christine Lee in their research.
The competition featured 19 different sessions with 260 students from 22 CSUs presenting 200 research projects. Cal State East Bay advanced 10 projects to the state competition, which was judged by 60 expert jurors. First and second place finishers were recognized in each of the 19 categories.
