CSUEB Celebrates Another Diverse Group of Graduates

Cal State East Bay will celebrate another diverse group of graduates at its 2015 commencement ceremonies June 12 and 13. The university is home to students from all walks of life, including many first-generation college students. Here’s a sample of some of the outstanding undergraduates that are receiving their degree from Cal State East Bay this weekend:

Rocio Perez came to Cal State East Bay as an undocumented student, and has inspired others to pursue their educational dreams. She was the keynote speaker at the and has served as a peer mentor in the . She ultimately wants to open a DREAMer program at a Bay Area university to continue this work.

Sarah Raven is continuing a family tradition by getting her degree from CSUEB. The speech pathology and audiology major has been involved in many different activities at East Bay, including serving on the executive board of the sorority Alpha Phi for three-and-a-half years, volunteering at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, and working with the aphasia treatment program on campus.

Theodore Folorunso is an international student from Nigeria, graduating with a degree in geology. His career goal is to become a helicopter pilot. He works two jobs at CSUEB as a student service officer with the University Police Department and as a personal trainer at the Recreation and Activities Center on campus.

Keeret Uppal came to Cal State East Bay while struggling with some personal challenges, but she is graduating near the top of her class. Uppal, who earns her degree in communications, was heavily involved on campus as part of a sorority, working for The Pioneer newspaper and as a CLASS senator.

Marie Ibarra is a musical theater major and served as the Executive Vice President of this year. She has participated in numerous other clubs and organizations, and also made time to take on side projects in graphic design, editing and photography in order to help pay for her schooling when financial aid wasn’t enough.
