California State University, East Bay undergraduate students Teresa Gamber and Jacqueline Ortiz have been awarded the 2016 Sustainability Prize from the Office of Sustainability for their work in promoting and enhancing environmentally-friendly practices on the CSUEB campus.
“Teresa Gamber and Jacqueline Ortiz are both exceptional scholars with a passion for sustainability,” Director of Sustainability Jillian Buckholz said. “They demonstrated their enthusiasm through their internships and work on campus, and both women plan to work in the environmental field after they graduate. No one is more deserving of the Sustainability Prize this year than Teresa and Jacqueline.”
Students were nominated by a faculty member and judged on an essay that describes their work in the sustainability area. They were also required to provide letters of recommendation or other documentation to substantiate the significance of their work.
As winners of the prize, Gamber and Ortiz will accompany two CSUEB faculty representatives to the 16th National Conference and Global Forum in Washington, D.C., Jan. 19-21. The conference is hosted by the National Council on Science and the Environment. This year’s theme is “The Food-Water-Energy Nexus.”
Sustainability can be broadly defined as efforts to enhance human and environmental health, social justice, and economic security to maintain the needs of current and future generations. To promote sustainability on the CSUEB campus and beyond, the university provides valuable hands-on experience through internships and service-learning projects.
