CSUEB's London program debuted last summer.

Cal State East Bay students will have a unique opportunity to earn academic units while spending part of their summer in England or Brazil through a program offered by the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences (CLASS), in cooperation with the Center of International Education. This summer’s faculty-led programs will include the , now in its second year, and new .

Kathleen Rountree, dean of CLASS, expects the students who participate in these programs to have a transformative experience. “The college’s new summer study abroad programs provide a uniquely exciting opportunity for students to experience in-depth study in a particular field of study, within the context of another culture or geographic region,” Rountree said. “They will return better prepared to succeed as professionals in an increasingly global society.”

Cal State East Bay has been committed to significantly expanding its study abroad reach in accordance with — a five-year initiative launched in 2014 by the Institute of International Education (IIE) to double the number of U.S. students studying abroad by the end of the decade.

Currently, only 300,000 students of the 2.6 million who earn undergraduate degrees each year partake in study abroad programs, according to IIE.  

Cal State East Bay is one of approximately 350 U.S. universities and colleges participating in the pledge to extend study abroad opportunities so that more American students can broaden their perspective on a global level. However, CSUEB is one of only 28 educational institutions that have pledged to increase the number of its study abroad participants threefold.

“Although students have had opportunities to study at other universities during the summer, these are the first programs in recent history offered by CSUEB faculty members, specifically for CSUEB students,” said Kelly Moran, director of Cal State East Bay’s Center for International Education.

Offered for the second consecutive year, the Summer London Program includes five weeks in London where students study the history and practice of documentary filmmaking in the United Kingdom. Led by William Lawson, assistant professor in the Department of Communication, students have the opportunity to create films while studying in the multicultural setting.

For those looking to immerse themselves in Brazil’s history and culture as the country prepares to host the Olympics in 2016, the two-week long Summer Rio Program — offered for the first time this year — provides an inside look at that nation’s social, political, economic and cultural developments. Led by Sukari Ivester, assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Services, the program curriculum will be taught through a series of formal lectures, guided hikes and tours, and meetings with local community leaders in Rio de Janeiro. 

Both programs allow students to earn eight credits toward their major or general educational requirements.

In total, the two summer programs received approximately 60 applications from eager students hoping to study outside of their home country this summer. To qualify for either of the two programs, applicants must be current, degree-seeking CSUEB students; eligible to enroll in the Summer 2016 quarter; maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75; and be in good academic standing.

Undergraduate students from CSUEB participate in study abroad programs throughout the academic year, Moran said. Previously, students have participated in study abroad programs in Argentina, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, France, Germany, Ghana, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, Sweden, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.
