The American Council on Education (ACE) has announced that Cal State East Bay Associate Dean Dennis Chester has been selected for a 2016-17 fellowship. ACE fellows participate in a national leadership program allowing them to attend seminars and training, and the organization offers a mentor relationship with senior leadership at another institution.
Chester said he feels privileged to participate in the program, and is eager to learn more about leadership and higher education. He will spend the summer fine-tuning a research project focused on student success programs, and begin his work in September.
“Right now [my project] is under construction … but I want to look at student success programs and how to integrate them into more classrooms,” Chester said. “I’m glad to have this opportunity [and] I’ll be able to add further skills to the work I’m already doing here.”
College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences Dean Kathleen Rountree said that while Chester will be away a bit more than usual during the upcoming school year, he will continue to maintain his role as associate dean.
Two of Chester’s colleagues in the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences have participated in the fellowship program — former Communications Department Chair and Associate Dean Gale Young and Dr. Robert Phelps, director of CSUEB’s Concord Campus.
Since it began in 1965, more than 1,800 vice presidents, deans, department chairs, faculty and other academic leaders have participated in the ACE program.
