Cal State East Bay kinesiology student Sara Silva spent the past year studying why high school freshmen and sophomores are less likely than their peers to participate in sports, and is now being recognized by the American Kinesiology Association for her dedication and leadership.

Silva, 22, a senior at CSUEB, is one of a handful of students receiving the AKA’s Undergraduate Scholar Award, which honors students whose academic and leadership records are distinctive.

To be considered for the award, students must be nominated by faculty, have demonstrated an interest in the field of kinesiology, and possess qualities that demonstrate they will succeed after graduation.

Silva and other recipients will receive a certificate and be listed in an archive of awardees on the American Kinesiology website.

Though unaware of the award before her nomination, Silva said her participation in nearly every program or function planned by the department most likely contributed to her recognition.

“I think what sets me apart (is) how much I’m involved, not just in the kinesiology department but on campus in general,” Silva said.

Silva has played women’s soccer at CSUEB for the past four years, worked as a personal trainer, and has presented the findings of her research project at several Bay Area schools and at two out-of-state kinesiology conferences.

“I really value the Cal State East Bay kinesiology department and the extracurricular activities they encourage,” she said. “It lets us apply the knowledge we’re learning in the classroom.”

Silva will head to University of St. Augustine in San Marcos, Calif., later this year for physical therapy school and said this recognition is an honor she’s excited to accept as a graduating senior.

“I wasn’t expecting to win an award but I appreciate the recognition,” she said. “It was a total surprise and I’m really humbled.”
