Stephanie Couch, executive director of Cal State East Bay’s Institute for STEM Education, was recently recognized as one of the for her achievements in developing science, technology, engineering and math programs.

Couch was one of 150 selected for the recognition, which celebrates female business leaders in real estate, law, tech, financing, education and health care fields.

According to the SF Business Times, the women selected may work in diverse fields, but all are leaders in their organizations and the community.

The works to provide faculty, students and staff with the support they need to be successful in STEM-related fields. The institute also makes sure students at CSUEB and the community at-large have access to the STEM knowledge required in daily life.

Couch said while she’s pleased with the recent recognition, she can’t help but mention the faculty, staff and community partners who support the institute.

“I really see it as a recognition of the work a lot of people here at CSUEB and in our community do together,” she said. “I’m really proud of all the people and organizations who meet on an ongoing basis to align efforts and identify ways of creating a larger collective impact  … I couldn’t be more thankful for the way that everyone pitches in and pulls together on behalf of the students in our region.”

Couch added that the institute has had several specific projects in the last year that have helped propel it forward. Work with the Alameda County Office of Education on increasing STEM learning opportunities in after-school programs; with the Contra Costa County Office of Education and others on STEM college and career pathways; and with the Peralta Community College District, and the Oakland and Berkeley Unified School Districts on ways to increase high school students’ success in mathematics are just a few examples of the efforts underway in the East Bay.

“There’s so much happening because the community and faculty have been so supportive. It’s just an amazing joint effort,” she said.

Couch is also proud of the institute’s work with the private sector and its business partners including Bayer, Wareham Development, Chevron, the Hellman Foundation, Tesoro and many others.

“I’m proud of the impact that the institute is having and the ways we’ve been able to piece partnerships and financing together to create something larger from all of the individual efforts,” she said. “We really are a model for ways the public, private and non-profit sectors can join together to have a larger collective impact."

Couch also received the 2015 Biotechnology Educator Award from the California Life Sciences Association last year.
