Cal State East Bay’s Department of Educational Leadership and the Center for Research, Equity and Collaborative Engagement will host its 8th annual Leadership Institute on May 21. This year’s theme is "Educated, Engaged, Effective: Social Justice Leadership for Student Success."

Each year, the event brings together the university’s doctoral, master's and administrative credential students, who present their research to peers and members of the Bay Area education community.

This year, 90 graduate students will deliver more than 70 presentations and participate in several workshops and panels. Presentations, roundtable sessions and discussions will center on how critical issues of diversity, equity and social justice leadership affect student success.

Topics include: Interrupting the Criminalization of African American Boys in the American Education System; Improving the Outcomes of People with Severe Cognitive Disabilities; and Middle School Anxiety and Stress Management through Mindfulness.

Director of CRECE Bobbie Plough said the event is a chance for students and public schools to connect over a shared interest in student success.

“CSUEB’s Department of Education believes that higher education must partner with public schools to produce relevant research that supports high academic achievement for all students,” she said.

The Leadership Institute is scheduled for May 21 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Union City.
