Cal State East Bay recognized 278 graduating seniors for their academic excellence Saturday at the university’s annual Honors Convocation.

The ceremony, held at the University Peristyle in front of the music building, brought together more than 450 Pioneer family members, friends and supporters to campus.

Each student graduating with the distinction of cum laude (3.65-3.74 GPA), magna cum laude (3.75-3.84 GPA), and summa cum laude (3.85-4.0 GPA) received an honors medallion to be worn at the undergraduate commencement ceremony in June.

Graduating music majors Brandon Biggs and Lillian Yee opened the ceremony with a rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner,” and senior Alyssa Palma, a geology major, reminded her classmates to follow their dreams and continue working hard beyond graduation.

“You have mastered the juggling act … you pushed through it all,” she said. “You are a pioneer today, a pioneer at heart. Continue to strive toward the goals you create.”

Following the ceremony, students, their families and staff mingled at a reception in the Redwood Grove.
