Marquise Cherry
- May 27, 2016
Cal State East Bay senior is an NCAA Division II All-American for the second straight year after finishing in sixth place on Thursday at the 2016 NCAA D-II long jump championship.
Battling high winds at the IMG Academy, Cherry recorded the longest jump of his career in his third attempt with a distance of 7.63 meters (25 feet, 0.5 inches). The mark stands as the fourth longest in program history.
That distance qualified Cherry for the finals and cemented his All-American status. He didn't top it in his final three attempts, but it held as the sixth longest among the 19 national championship contenders.
"I'm proud of Marquise, this is a great way to finish his career," head coach said. "Today was his best effort of the season, as he came up with a huge clutch third jump to make the finals."
Cherry, a native of Diamond Bar, Calif., was the runner-up in the long jump and third-place finisher in the triple jump at the 2016 CCAA Championships.
In 2015, Cherry captured the CCAA long jump championship and went on to finish ninth at the NCAA D-II Championships, earning second team All-America honors. He's the first CSUEB male track and field athlete to be an All-American since the program rejoined Division II in 2009-10.
