Faculty Writing ‘Idea Book’ to Share Resources About Institutional Learning Outcomes

  • October 3, 2016

As part of the semester conversion process, a special committee of Cal State East Bay faculty is developing an Institutional Learning Outcomes Idea Book. When finished, the book will provide a platform for instructors to share ideas and strategies for creating lesson plans that address the university’s institutional learning outcomes.

Committee members bring with them a variety of expertise, and all are generating ideas, researching pedagogy and reaching out to colleagues about strategies that have helped them and should be included in the book, said Julie Glass, the mathematics chairperson.

The book will be organized by the learning outcomes — thinking and reasoning; communication; diversity; collaboration; sustainability; and specialized education — but Glass said the committee also intends to have it searchable by other characteristics. For example, items may be tagged for class level or format.

Glass said the book is a chance for faculty to learn from one another and better serve students.

“We are committed to having the institutional learning outcomes reflected in the curriculum so that our students see these high level outcomes in their courses,” she said. “We enjoy talking about teaching and sharing ideas about how to implement common outcomes across the curriculum.”

Glass said the book, which will likely be published online, could be ready as early as next year.
