A Message from President Morishita: Inside East Bay, December 2016

The last few weeks have been a time of turmoil for many of us. No matter what outcome you were hoping for, the result of the presidential election has elicited an outpouring of strong emotion and sentiment. During this time, I have had the opportunity to speak with many students, faculty and staff about their concerns, hopes, and fears. Now more than ever, our campus should take pride in our diversity of beliefs and pause a moment to reflect on what that means to us as a university and as individuals sharing a community.
Cal State East Bay is, first and foremost, committed to social justice and equity for all. The current discourse, while difficult at times, is essential in order for us to move forward as a society. As a university, it is our responsibility to provide the tools for our campus to engage in healthy debate and critical analysis. This is our opportunity to champion civility, tolerance and constructive dialogue, whether in the classroom or in the residence halls — it is up to each of us to speak out and stand up for those afraid to do so for themselves. However, as we debate, and often times disagree, threats, assaults and intimidating behavior are not acceptable regardless of which position you support. Such actions and behavior do not reflect the values of this university and will not be tolerated. Only through civil discussion can our university community, and thus our society, make progress.
As 2016 comes to a close, I hope that you will find the upcoming winter break a time of relaxation and peace. Reflect upon the accomplishments of our university and think about 2017 as a new year and opportunity for us to shine and distinguish ourselves as we continue to rise.
